It’s left up to chief information officers to find ways to support new technologies. Making decisions about which technologies to acquire today and which to adopt in the future can have a significant impact on budgets and strategies, and it requires wise choices, with little room for error. The Leadership Board for CIO's in higher education provides insights and strategies and personal relationships that can help IT leaders in higher education plan for and manage technologies and resources.

The Leadership Board for CIO's (LBCIO) was formed by The Chronicle of Higher Education and Dr. Michael Zastrocky in 2009. Since 2011, LBCIO is an independent higher education organization run by LBCIO members and Dr. Zastrocky. The annual LBCIO global survey of higher education CIOs produced for ten years and provided insights into the strategic and tactical thinking of higher education CIOs and comparisons between types and sizes of institutions. We stopped doing the annual survey during Covid and currently do short surveys on specific topics chosen by members.

The purpose of the Board is to provide higher-education CIO’s with a series of online and face-to-face discussions to compare best or common business practices, discuss major issues pertaining to member functions and needs, and provide benchmarking data and key metrics to support both tactical and strategic planning. The size of the Board will be limited to no more than 50 members in order to provide a relationship-based experience.

The Board meets regularly on-line and face-to-face with agendas for the meetings set by Board members. Board members are able to join on-campus meetings virtually if they are unable to attend physically.

Meeting Schedule:

Online meetings will be held on a monthly basis around topics that are chosen by members. We will determine meeting times based on user schedules and time constraints. Meeting length will vary between one half hour to one hour based on the topics chosen for the meeting.

Face-to-face meetings will be held on a member campus for one and one half days. Usually arrival is the night before the full day meeting and the meetings end at noon on the second day to allow members to catch flights.
